I wish I could tell you that I’d always had a burning desire to be a business owner, but the truth of the matter is, it evolved over time.
I’ve had one of those career paths that from the outside makes no sense. I started out a teacher, designer, counselor, sales rep and then a business owner. If you’re like most people you’re reading this and saying to yourself, “What the heck?!” However as you look at each profession there are key factors that link those professions together. Each one involves working with people, being a problem solver, educating someone else, and not being afraid to be the one who steps out front to point the way.
It took me a long time to recognize that my strength lie in my independence, and my desire to work with people. Being a business owner enables me to utilize my strengths, and satisfy my desire for independence. Of course it doesn’t come without anxiety, but my anxiety now stems from me—in other words when something goes wrong—and in business those occasions pop up—I get to use my problem solving skills, find the solution and work it through in order to satisfy my customers.
Originally I went into business with a franchise that specialized in home furnishings. As much as I loved that venue, the realization sank in that it wasn’t where I wanted to be. That combined with a an hour and half commute one-way to my store, six days a week was just not working for me. I had no life, and the stress of everything combined really took its toll on me. I was finally blessed with selling it in April of 2008—you can’t even imagine the relief. After taking a few months off the regenerate and decide what I wanted to do next, I decided that no matter what, I wanted to be in business again, but not in a traditional retail setting.
The hunt was on the find the perfect fit for me. The lesson was driven home with my first business venture, that if you’re not doing what makes you happy, that “thing” that is your passion—the days become very long. I met the original owner of Adorable Baby Clothing, and after reviewing the business and lots of talking, decided this was something I could get excited about. Plus, I was about to become a grandmother to twin girls, and it would afford me the luxury of being near them.

I call it my fourth college degree! I’ve learned so much about what it takes to run a successful website, from the mechanics of maintaining it and updating it, to marketing. Along the way I have met so many amazing business women. I truly am in awe of the ingenuity, creativity, and business savvy of these women. They inspire me.
Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned since first entering the business world, is that you can’t let the “nay sayers” discourage you. The truth of the matter is, there’s never really a good time to go into business—no matter what you’re considering. However, if you’ve researched, planned, and still feel led to go into a business for yourself, then you have to go for it. Most people will point out why you shouldn’t and if you let that stop you, you’ll never experience the exhilaration of being your own boss—of being the one who makes the decisions.
You’ll learn something new just about every day—you’ll lose sleep—and yet at the end of the week, you’ll know that it’s the best decision you made. That doesn’t mean there won’t be days where you’ll wonder why you ever went it business—but given time, effort, and perseverance you’ll find that most likely it was the best thing you could have done.
What I love about the products on my website, Adorable Baby Clothing, is that the vast majority of the products are American made. The quality of the materials, and fabrics are top notch, and they’re the kinds of items that will be handed down from one child to the next. The product line is ever evolving with new things being added continuously. It allows a parent to shop from the comfort of their home, knowing that what’s going to arrive will be a quality purchase. Many of the clothing items come in a wide array of sizes that you typically won’t find in the department stores. You’ll find perhaps the largest variety of formal wear for children than on any other site. So, whether it’s a formal occasion, holidays, just playing outside, or if you’re looking for a unique gift, there’s a good chance you’ll find it at Adorable Baby Clothing.
Nothing makes me happier than to get a note from one of my customers, who’s thrilled with what they’ve ordered. I hope you’ll take a few minutes and stop by to take a look for yourself!
