Mastering the Art of Developing People

Written by Michael J. Beck. Posted in Business and Career Articles

People-in-the-Office

There is tremendous opportunity and satisfaction as a leader in developing others.

By effectively developing the people around us, we elicit excellence in a number of impactful and far-reaching ways. Developing others is an important function of effective leadership.

The first benefit, obviously, is to the person being developed. When we help someone expand their skill set and knowledge base, we make them more valuable and more versatile, which in turn, instills a sense of pride. Instilling pride in work and workmanship is a cornerstone of the foundation for eliciting excellence. In addition, we demonstrate our belief in them, their abilities, and their potential. This in turn nurtures loyalty and responsiveness towards you.

Money and Career: Follow Your Bliss

Career transition has money and career on many women's minds lately

Since many women are sensing the change in the air, I've heard several comments about using this time of workplace instability to "find your bliss".

What I've noticed is that often it is believed that if you "just do what you love", you will be successful and your hobby will morph into a business that can take the place of your job. It would be nice if all we had to do were "build it and they will come".

Nowadays, this is not even the case and what is really not likely to happen is that you will suddenly find yourself with a thriving business by simply following your bliss. No, what you are going to have to do is have a vision and a plan in place to put structure to your bliss so that it can take form in the marketplace.

Job Descriptions For Positions In The Film Industry

Film-Industry

The film industry is highly competitive for all jobs, including those for voice-related occupations such as: announcers, narrators, broadcasters, and voice over talents

Although, small or independent filmmakers and networks have better job prospects for those just starting out in the industry.

Employment is usually centered in major cities with the majority in New York and Los Angeles, although the Austin, TX film industry has really taken off.

Voice jobs in film not only require that you have a great voice with a range, but also the acting talent to go with it. Voice over jobs that require you "get into character", such as working on an animated film, can be very difficult and require talent and skills. Broadcasting and announcer gigs don't require the acting talent, so much as the ability to ad-lib and think fast.

Recognize Your Niche

Are you waiting for that "aha!" moment to finally figure out your special role on the world's stage?

Do you expect that one day your specialty will just hit you like a bolt of lightning?

If you're waiting for the light bulb to turn on, you may end up sitting in the dark for a very long time. More often than not, identifying your niche and your specialty is more like a silhouette emerging through the fog.

In my own experience, picking a niche always comes about gradually. You're working on one thing, and then another thing similar to that, and before long, you are being associated with a specific specialty or setting.

What is job costing?

Job Costing is the process of tracking the expenses incurred on a job they can be tracked against the original budget or an estimate for that job. Direct and indirect costs can be assigned to each open job; direct costs include the materials used, transportation costs, any rental equipment required and the associated staff costs for carrying out the work. Indirect costs can be amortised across jobs to give a complete job cost profile.

Actual costs such as payroll, administration and purchases can also be fed into the costing system to reflect actual, real costs and refine the level of charges. The main advantage of tracking this data is that it allows organisations to build up an accurate cost of works undertaken, and improves the estimation for future similar jobs. It also gives a wealth of job management information.
